Privacy Policy
Effective Date: January 1st, 2026
This Privacy Policy explains how Tara Armstrong and her affiliates (referred to as “we,” “us,” “the MLA’s Office,” or “I”) collects, uses, discloses, and protects personal information on this website (the “Website”).
We are committed to protecting your privacy and complying fully with British Columbia’s Personal Information Protection Act (“PIPA”) and all other applicable Canadian privacy laws.
We collect personal information to engage with constituents, provide services, respond to inquiries, and communicate about legislative, public, and electoral matters. This includes sharing certain information with third parties, including registered political parties, where permitted or required by law for electoral, political, or constituent-engagement purposes. This Policy applies to all personal information collected through the Website, including via contact forms, newsletter sign-ups, event registrations, volunteer forms, petitions, or any other online interactions. It covers the MLA’s Office, staff, volunteers, and any third-party service providers acting on our behalf. Business contact information (e.g., work email or phone) is not considered personal information under PIPA and is excluded from this Policy.
1. Identifying Purposes
We collect personal information only for purposes that a reasonable person would consider appropriate in the circumstances. We identify these purposes at or before the time of collection (or as soon as practicable afterward). Examples of personal information we may collect include:
Contact details (name, email address, postal address, phone number)
Messages or inquiries sent through contact forms or other communications
Demographic or preference information (e.g., constituency affiliation, interests in specific legislative issues)
Any other details you voluntarily provide (e.g., through event sign-ups, volunteer forms, surveys, or petitions)
Basic technical information automatically collected (e.g., IP address, browser type, pages visited)
We may also receive publicly available information or data from authorized sources such as Elections BC (e.g., voter lists) where permitted by the Election Act.
2. Consent
We will obtain your consent to collect, use, or disclose personal information, except where PIPA or other laws allow us to do so without consent (for example, for publicly available information, legal obligations, or certain electoral purposes under the Election Act). Consent may be express (e.g., checking a box) or implied (e.g., where you voluntarily provide information for an obvious purpose or do not opt out after clear notice). You may withdraw consent at any time by contacting us, subject to legal or contractual restrictions. Withdrawal may limit our ability to provide certain services or respond effectively to your inquiries.
3. Limiting Collection, Use, and Disclosure
We collect, use, and disclose personal information only to the extent necessary for the identified purposes (or purposes reasonably related to them). We do not sell or rent your personal information. Purposes for which we may collect, use, and disclose personal information include the following (among others):
Responding to your inquiries and providing constituent services
Communicating legislative updates, events, campaigns, or issues of public interest
Maintaining mailing lists, newsletters, or supporter/volunteer databases
Organizing or promoting events, petitions, or public engagement activities
Conducting polling, surveys, or research related to policy or electoral activities
Fulfilling electoral purposes, including voter outreach and political engagement (as authorized under the Election Act)
Operating and improving the Website (e.g., security, analytics)
Complying with legal or regulatory requirements
Sharing with Third Parties (Including Registered Political Parties):
We may share your personal information with third parties where necessary or permitted by law. This explicitly includes sharing with registered political parties for electoral, political, or constituent-engagement purposes. Sharing occurs only for the purposes described above and is subject to contractual safeguards requiring recipients to protect the information and use it only for agreed purposes. We may also share information with:
Service providers who help operate the Website or deliver services (e.g., email platforms, website hosts, analytics providers). These providers are contractually bound to protect your information and use it only for our purposes.
Professional advisors or as required by law (e.g., to Elections BC or other authorities).
We do not disclose personal information for any additional purpose without further consent, unless permitted by PIPA.
4. Limiting Retention
We retain personal information only as long as necessary to fulfill the identified purposes, meet legal obligations (e.g., election finance or record-keeping requirements), or resolve disputes. Once no longer required, we securely dispose of or destroy it using appropriate methods. If we use your information to make a decision that directly affects you, we will retain it for at least one year to allow you an opportunity to request access.
5. Accuracy
We make reasonable efforts to ensure that your personal information is accurate, complete, and up to date, particularly when it may be used to make a decision about you or disclosed to another organization. You may request corrections at any time (see Section 9).
6. Safeguards
We protect personal information with appropriate administrative, technical, and physical safeguards against loss, theft, unauthorized access, disclosure, copying, use, or modification. Examples include secure servers, encryption where appropriate, access controls, staff/volunteer training, and confidentiality agreements. In the event of a privacy breach that creates a real risk of significant harm, we will notify you and the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner for British Columbia as required by PIPA.
7. Openness
This Policy is publicly available on our Website. We will make readily available specific information about our policies and practices relating to the management of personal information.
8. Access and Correction
You have the right to request access to the personal information we hold about you and to request corrections if it is inaccurate or incomplete. Requests must be made in writing and include sufficient detail. We will respond within a reasonable time (typically 30 days) and may charge a minimal fee for access in some cases. We will inform you of any reasons for refusal. If we make a correction, we will notify any third parties to whom we disclosed the information (where appropriate).
9. Complaints and Inquiries
If you have concerns about our privacy practices or compliance with PIPA, you may contact our Privacy Officer or file a complaint directly with the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner for British Columbia (www.oipc.bc.ca) (www.oipc.bc.ca).
10. Cookies, Tracking Technologies, and Analytics
The Website may use cookies, web beacons, or similar technologies to enhance functionality, analyze usage, personalize content, and improve security. These may collect non-identifiable technical data. You can manage cookie preferences through your browser settings. Third-party services we use (if any) may have their own privacy practices; we encourage you to review them.
11. Links to Other Websites
Our Website may contain links to third-party sites. We are not responsible for the privacy practices or content of those sites. We encourage you to review their privacy policies.
12. Children’s Privacy
Our Website is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children without appropriate parental consent.
13. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices or legal requirements. The revised Policy will be posted on the Website with an updated effective date. Continued use of the Website after changes constitutes acceptance of the revised Policy. We will notify you of material changes where feasible (e.g., via email if we have your contact information).
